Behind / Sidecar

Sidecar is led by Randy Kinne. Most recently, performance and stability architect on the Experience Platform team at Intuit Mailchimp. Direction, quality, and approach across the company’s web infrastructure: APIs, multiple frontend frameworks, UI components, toolchains, and AI exploration. Before that, tech lead of the recommendations engine, optimizing in-product feature discovery for 13M+ active email marketers.

Sidecar takes that experience and attaches it to your business. The work that matters: engineering, growth, AI strategy, performance, brand. Staff-engineering scale, applied as fully as the engagement requires, including the proprietary tooling we’ve built to make it sharper.

What we’ve shipped.

Proprietary AI analytics infrastructure that deploys with every engagement. A brand-and-build for an editorial publication. A growth-and-build for a one-truck mobile detailer in Ann Arbor. A real sim racing team shipped as a working arcade game. The range is the point.

Proprietary AI infrastructure

Bearing. Sidecar's own analytics tool. Three layers, internal first.

Measurement, interpretation, recommendation. Sidecar likes Plausible but wanted control of both the cost curve and the feature curve, which renting can't offer. So we built our own. Lightweight, dogfooded on this site, deployed on every Sidecar engagement. Live at bearing.sidecar.services.

Editorial publication

Stint. An editorial publication, designed and built end-to-end.

Identity, site, CMS, performance. A live Al Kamel timing-data integration turns articles into real-time pit-wall views during a session. State of the art for an editorial publication, and not something any other magazine or news site has shipped. Reads like a magazine. Behaves like the data when the data is live.

Small business growth

A small mobile detailing business, treated like the operator it is.

Z's Auto Detailing. One truck, one operator, Ann Arbor. The kind of business almost nobody applies staff-engineer-grade growth thinking to. Pricing redesigned. Site rebuilt. Local SEO and a review loop installed. 2.3× monthly revenue and 138 five-star reviews later, the calendar fills two weeks out.

Sim racing

Woodpecker Racing Team. A real sim racing team shipped as a working arcade game.

A real sim racing team didn't want a Squarespace template. We shipped a playable browser racer faithful to the 2000-era Woody Woodpecker Racing titles, with a persistent leaderboard whose top score belongs to one of the team's own drivers. Built for fun, shipped with the same engineering discipline as anything we ship for clients. Loads immediately. Live at woodpeckerracing.com.

02 / What we do

Where we attach.

  • 01

    AI strategy & implementation

Audit how your company is and isn’t using AI. Recommendation, then implementation. We’ve built routing, recommendations, and personalization at scale, so we can tell you which AI moves the business and which is theater. We work on AI that makes strong teams sharper, not AI that replaces them. If the goal is reducing headcount, we’re not the right shop.

    Growth & experimentation

Experiments that test what they claim to test, read honestly. Sample size, power, confidence done right. If your test harness can’t tell you when to ship, we’ll fix it.

    Web performance & UX

Core Web Vitals, real-user metrics, interaction work. Ship a faster site without rebuilding it. Most companies don’t realize what they’re missing until they see the before-and-after.

    Developer experience

Internal tooling, build systems, type discipline. The unsexy infrastructure that makes a ten-person team feel like a thirty-person one. Cheaper than hiring.

    Digital presence, brand & SEO

Identity, site, CMS, search, content systems. Everything a design studio would do, as one of several things we do. Useful when the site is from 2019 and the brand looks smaller than the company is.

    Advisory

A staff engineer in your corner, by the month. Staff is the level where the work shifts from solving the problems someone hands you to finding the business problems no one has named yet, and solving those. For founders who don’t need a project but need someone to call when something is on fire.

Got a problem worth doing right?

We’re a small practice and we take on a small number of engagements at a time. If you’ve got something real (a system that needs rethinking, a strategy that needs operator judgment, a site that isn’t pulling its weight), write us a paragraph or two about what’s going on.
